Project Description

Linked Series Identification

Linked Series Identification catching serial offenders/shoplifters targeting the same business.

Super Recognisers International can provide crime analysis by identifying and “linking” offenders to a set of crimes committed, which can be particularly useful in the investigation of suspected additional crimes, interrogations, offender profiling and predicting future events.  Super Recognisers are particularly useful in identifying the additional unsolved crimes that are part of an existing crime series. In addition, a further analysis could be also carried out to generate a list of additional crimes to jointly investigate.

Linked Series Identification Targets Serial Offenders

An example of LSI is with the retail traders where shoplifting costs the industry over £300 million pounds a year in reported crime. It is believed that only a small percentage of thefts are being reported so the cost is believed to be much, much higher.

Individual shoplifters often receive a low punitive sentence at court as shoplifting is perceived to be a victimless crime. The perpetrators are thus often out of prison in a matter of weeks and free once more to follow their criminal pursuits.

Such serial criminals quickly return to targeting the same venues over and over again, often for years at a time, leading other shoplifters into targeting the same venue/town/city as it is seen as an easy and soft target.

Most of these shoplifters are known offenders so images are easily accessible of them. Our Super Recognisers will work with local private security or police services at the venues and link these criminals to multiple offences over a prolonged period of time, rather than just one offence and ultimately present this evidential package to the client and police so that the judiciary can see the full extent and scale of their wrongdoings.

This is done by uploading the images onto one of the databases used by SRI and our CAU will then identify and link several images together. If an unknown subject commits several offences at the location, the case can still be built, and we will deploy a covert unit to spot and identify the subject. There are several techniques to use when developing linked series of crime cases.

Catch These offenders With Super Recognisers

SRI have been successful with this approach as shoplifters who would usually get just a few weeks in prison, have received year long sentences as our evidence has presented the full scope and scale of their crimes. Ultimately, such sanctions lead to the thieves moving away from the area upon release and making previously vulnerable venues into a much harder target.

Such an approach represents the most cost effective and efficient method of dealing with persistent offenders, leading to longer custodial sentences, saving many hours or days of work when it comes to security teams, the police, the courts processing paperwork, the defendant etc.

LSI will work on all manner of investigations and SRI have used this technique on burglary cases, armed robberies, handbag theft and pick pocketing crimes. When faced with such overwhelming linked evidence, many criminals, advised by their legal representatives, will submit a guilty plea at a far earlier point in the judicial proceedings thus saving time for the courts and saving costs for the taxpayer.

In spite of their prohibition, banned supporters frequently attempt to gain access into football games and they tend to buy their tickets from touts who surround the stadiums in order to access the ground.
